You Are Not Bad at AI - You Just Haven’t Been Taught the Right Way Yet
Most people think they are behind when it comes to AI. I hear this every week from coworkers, friends, and mentees.
“I should know more.”
“I don’t understand half the terms people use.”
“I feel like everyone else is ahead of me.”
But here is the truth: you are not bad at AI - you have just been taught it in a way that makes it feel harder than it needs to be.
We did not start math by learning calculus. We did not learn to read by being handed Shakespeare. Yet for some reason, the world expects everyone to understand AI by absorbing jargon and technical diagrams.
It is no wonder people feel overwhelmed.
AI becomes easier when we flip the order. Start with understanding. Then try something small. Then repeat. This is what actually works.
1. Most AI explanations start too high
If the first thing someone learns about AI is the phrase “neural networks,” they are already in the deep end. Most people do not need the math behind how models work. They need the big picture in plain English.
For example: AI is a tool that predicts what you want next.
That is it. That is the foundation. Everything else builds from there.
When we simplify the starting point, people relax. When they relax, they learn faster.
2. Confidence often matters more than capability
You do not need to be technical to use AI well. You need to be curious and willing to try.
The hardest part is the first moment, opening the tool, typing the first sentence, not worrying if you said the prompt perfectly.
When you take that first step, your confidence grows. With confidence comes momentum. And with momentum comes real skill.
3. You only need one useful skill to begin
AI is not about memorizing 100 tools or mastering complex workflows. The easiest way to begin is to pick one simple thing you already do in your day and let AI help you do it faster.
For example:
Turn outline notes into a paragraph.
Turn a long email into bullet points.
Turn confusing text into something simple.
You only need one small win to understand that AI is not something to fear.
4. You are learning something new and that means you deserve space to begin at the beginning
The narrative around AI often makes people feel behind. But nobody is behind on a technology that is still changing every month.
Learning AI is not a race. It is a skill. Like writing. Like presenting. Like anything else.
The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to get comfortable!
5. You have already learned many harder things
The unfamiliar always feels intimidating, but you have learned much more complex skills in your life. AI only feels new because it is new.
You have the ability to learn it…you always have.
A gentle starting point
If you want to take your first step the right way, I created a beginner friendly guide that breaks AI down in plain English. No jargon. No pressure. Just clarity.
You are not behind. You are at the starting line. And you get to begin in a way that actually supports your learning.
