Fear is the Weed That Chokes Growth
We often imagine growth as a grand, sweeping transformation. But in reality, growth starts small, like a seed. And just like in any garden, what you plant matters — but so does what you let grow unchecked.
In my experience, the most invasive and destructive thing in the garden of personal growth is fear.
Fear doesn’t show up all at once. It creeps in quietly. It whispers things like:
❌ “You’re not tech-savvy.”
❌ “You’re too late to the game.”
❌ “You’re not cut out for this.”
These thoughts can feel like truth. But they’re just weeds.
A Different Kind of Inner Voice
If you’ve ever tried to learn a new tool, dive into a technical skill, or challenge yourself in a professional space that feels unfamiliar, you’ve likely heard those same whispers. I know I have.
But I’ve learned to replace them with a new voice. One that sounds more like this:
✨ “I haven’t tried that yet.”
✨ “I’m just getting started.”
✨ “This might be hard, but I’m capable of learning.”
These are small mindset shifts, but they’re incredibly powerful. They help uproot fear before it takes hold. And when practiced consistently, they create space for real growth.
Why Mindset Shifts Matter
Mindset isn’t fluff. It’s the foundation of how we show up in our careers, our communities, and our learning journeys.
A fixed mindset, the belief that your skills are set in stone, closes doors before you even knock.
A growth mindset, the belief that abilities can be developed, opens those same doors wide.
It’s the difference between saying:
“I’m bad at data” and “I haven’t explored data tools yet.”
“Public speaking isn’t for me” and “I get nervous, but I’m improving every time.”
Every time you choose curiosity over fear, you’re planting something new. And just like a seed, that choice grows with time and care.
Planting the Seed of Learning
I’ve seen this firsthand in the upskilling workshops I’ve led. When someone logs into a new platform or asks a “basic” question, you can often see the tension and self-doubt flicker across their face. But the moment they complete a project, create a simple chart, or run a basic query, that flicker turns into something else. Pride. Confidence. Momentum.
That’s what growth looks like in real time.
And here’s the truth: growth doesn’t begin with mastery. It begins with permission.
Permission to be a beginner. Permission to not know everything. Permission to try anyway.
Pulling the Weeds
If fear is a weed, mindset is your gardening tool. Fear may never fully disappear, especially when you’re trying something new. But you can catch it early, name it, and choose not to give it power.
Start by paying attention to the way you talk to yourself:
Swap “I can’t” with “I’m learning how to…”
Trade “What if I fail?” for “What if I grow?”
Replace “It’s too late” with “Now is a great time to start.”
Your Garden, Your Growth
No one else can plant your seeds. No one else can tend your garden.
But you can start today. Whether you’re opening that new analytics tool, signing up for a coding workshop, speaking up in a meeting, or asking the question you’ve been sitting on for weeks — the best time to begin is right now.
You don’t need to be fearless in order to grow. You just need to be brave enough to take the first step.
So, what mindset are you going to shift?
